The Burlington Farmers Market is a long-standing nonprofit community marketplace in Burlington, Vermont that supports local farmers, food producers, and artisans. Operating seasonally year-round, the market provides fresh, locally produced goods while fostering community connection and resilience, economic vitality, and access to healthy food.
Position Summary
The Market Manager is responsible for overseeing day-of operations at the Burlington Farmers Market and supporting ongoing market coordination in collaboration with the Market Director. This role is highly visible and hands-on, requiring strong organizational skills, customer service, and the ability to manage staff, volunteers, vendors, and logistics in a dynamic outdoor environment.
The Market Manager is present on market days for site set-up and breakdown, vendor and customer support, and administrative duties. Outside of market days, the Market Manager coordinates market activities, supports planning efforts, and supports additional tasks as needed, with opportunities shaped by the employee’s interests. There is room to grow and evolve within this position.
The Market Manager reports directly to the Market Director.
Schedule & Compensation
Guaranteed 15 hours per week, year-round
Hourly pay: $23–$25/hour, based on experience and qualifications, and relevant skills
Most candidates start between $23–$24/hour
A wage review occurs after 90 days, with the opportunity to advance within the range based on performance, reliability, and the evolving needs of the role
$500 gas stipend
Summer market season hours:
Every Saturday from May through the last Saturday of October
On-site hours: 6:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Winter market season hours:
Twice per month from November through April
On-site hours: 7:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Additional remote hours each week for administrative tasks, and team meetings.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Market Operations
Coordinate daily logistics to ensure smooth market operations
Serve as the primary point of contact for vendors ensuring a full and diverse vendor mix at each market
Recruit, schedule, and liaise with musicians and community partners
Manage the Community Outreach volunteer program in partnership with City Market (Onion River Co-op)
Administer vendor application processes in collaboration with the Market Director
Coordinate and facilitate vendor orientations twice annually
Participate in monthly Steering Committee meetings
Market Day Responsibilities
Be present at each market, providing excellent customer service and responding to questions or feedback from vendors, customers, community partners, and volunteers
Manage our emergency response system, and serve as the primary on-site point of contact between the market and emergency personnel if an issue or incident arises
Open and close the market site, including set-up and breakdown of the Market Information Tent and all market signage
Delegate tasks and supervise staff and volunteers during market set-up, operations, and breakdown
Ensure all signage, literature, merchandise, and handouts are properly displayed and maintained throughout the market day
Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming market environment
Enforce market guidelines and policies as needed throughout the market day
Administer the market’s currency programs, including 3SquaresVT (SNAP), Crop Cash, Crop Cash Plus, Burlington Farmers Market Bucks, and Farm to Family
Distribute reimbursement checks, and collect, count, and record all market currency from vendors
Organize and maintain storage areas, market totes, first-aid supplies, and equipment
Record Keeping & Reporting
Prepare vendor reimbursement logs and submit them to the Market Director
Complete required data logs for each market day
Follow established Market Manager checklists and operational procedures
Additional Duties & Responsibilities
Support special projects and initiatives as needed, and as time allows, which may include marketing support, developing new organizational systems, or assisting with basic design projects.
Skills & Qualifications
Essential
Strong organizational and time-management skills, with careful attention to detail
Excellent communication and customer service abilities
Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers
Comfort handling cash, vouchers, and financial tracking
Ability to work early mornings, outdoors, and in varying weather conditions
Ability to problem-solve calmly in a fast-paced, public-facing environment
Interest in local food systems, community engagement, or farmers markets
Must be able to lift 50lbs
Desired (but not required) Qualifications
Interest or experience in marketing, including newsletters and/or social media
Familiarity with Canva or other design tools, or enthusiasm to learn
Experience with QuickBooks or other basic accounting systems
Experience using Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, etc.)
Interest in improving systems, workflows, or processes
Comfort with public speaking, facilitation, or presentations
Work requirements
Must have access to a personal laptop for administrative and remote work
Reliable internet access for off-site tasks
Access to reliable transportation
